FAQ — Fire Alarm Systems Colorado Springs | Fire Werks LTD

Question 1

How often does a fire alarm system need to be inspected in Colorado Springs?

Accepted Answer

NFPA 72 requires a full fire alarm inspection at least once per year for most commercial buildings. Some components — such as smoke detectors and notification devices — require quarterly or semi-annual testing depending on the occupancy type. The Colorado Springs Fire Department and El Paso County enforce these requirements. Fire Werks LTD provides full annual inspection services with detailed compliance documentation.

Question 2

What happens during a fire alarm inspection?

Accepted Answer

Our NICET-certified technicians test every component of your system: control panels, smoke and heat detectors, manual pull stations, notification appliances (horns, strobes), sprinkler flow switches, tamper switches, and the central monitoring connection. We document all findings, identify any deficiencies, and provide a written report you can present to your AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction).

Question 3

What is NFPA 72 and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

NFPA 72 is the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code — the primary standard governing the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm systems in the United States. Compliance is required by the Colorado Springs Fire Department and El Paso County building codes. Non-compliance can result in failed inspections, fines, or increased liability. All Fire Werks LTD installations and inspections are performed to NFPA 72 standards.

Question 4

My fire alarm failed inspection — what do I do?

Accepted Answer

Call us at (719) 499-6956. We'll review the inspection report, identify the deficiencies, and provide a repair or remediation plan. We can often schedule repairs quickly to get you back into compliance before your re-inspection deadline. We also offer 24/7 emergency service for critical failures.

Question 5

How much does a fire alarm system cost in Colorado Springs?

Accepted Answer

Costs vary significantly based on building size, occupancy type, system complexity, and whether it's new construction or a retrofit. A small commercial space might start around $3,000–$8,000, while a large multi-story facility can run $50,000 or more. The best way to get an accurate number is to request a free quote — we'll assess your building and provide a detailed estimate at no charge.

Question 6

Do I need a permit to install a fire alarm system in Colorado Springs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Fire alarm installations in Colorado Springs require a permit from the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) and must comply with NFPA 72 and the local fire code. Fire Werks LTD handles the entire permitting process on your behalf — from plan submittal through final inspection sign-off.

Question 7

How long does a fire alarm installation take?

Accepted Answer

A small commercial installation typically takes 1–3 days. Larger or more complex projects — multi-story buildings, healthcare facilities, or systems with smoke control integration — can take several weeks. We'll give you a realistic timeline during the quoting process and work to minimize disruption to your operations.

Question 8

Can you upgrade or retrofit an existing fire alarm system?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. We regularly upgrade older systems to current NFPA 72 standards, replace end-of-life panels, add addressable devices, and integrate legacy systems with modern monitoring. A retrofit is often more cost-effective than a full replacement. Contact us for an assessment.

Question 9

What types of buildings do you install fire alarm systems in?

Accepted Answer

We serve commercial offices, retail, healthcare and medical facilities, schools, military and government buildings, aviation facilities, hotels and hospitality, industrial and warehouse spaces, and multi-family residential. Our team has specific experience with the unique code requirements for each occupancy type.

Question 10

What is fire alarm monitoring and do I need it?

Accepted Answer

Fire alarm monitoring means your system is connected to a 24/7 central monitoring station that dispatches the fire department when an alarm activates — even if no one is in the building. Most commercial occupancies in Colorado Springs are required by code to have monitored fire alarm systems. Fire Werks LTD provides monitoring services and can connect your system to a UL-listed monitoring center.

Question 11

What happens when my monitored fire alarm goes off?

Accepted Answer

The signal travels from your panel to the central monitoring station within seconds. The monitoring center attempts to verify the alarm (to reduce false dispatches), then contacts the Colorado Springs Fire Department. The entire process typically takes under 60 seconds from alarm activation to dispatch.

Question 12

How do I reduce false alarms?

Accepted Answer

False alarms are usually caused by dust or insects in detectors, cooking fumes near kitchen areas, steam from showers or HVAC, or low battery conditions. Regular maintenance and proper detector placement dramatically reduce false alarms. We can assess your system and recommend solutions — false alarms can result in fines from CSFD after repeated incidents.

Question 13

Do you offer 24/7 emergency fire alarm service in Colorado Springs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Fire Werks LTD provides 24/7 emergency service throughout Colorado Springs and El Paso County. If your fire alarm system is in trouble — panel fault, system offline, failed device, or post-incident damage — call us at (719) 499-6956 any time.

Question 14

My fire alarm is beeping or showing a trouble light — is it an emergency?

Accepted Answer

A "trouble" condition means the system has detected a fault — this could be a low battery, a wiring issue, a failed device, or a communication problem with the monitoring center. It's not necessarily an emergency, but it should be addressed promptly. Call us and we can often diagnose the issue over the phone before dispatching a technician.

Question 15

Are your technicians NICET certified?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Fire Werks LTD employs NICET-certified fire alarm technicians. NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certification is the industry standard for fire alarm professionals and is required or preferred by many AHJs and insurance carriers. Our team includes NICET Level IV certified personnel.
